Thousands of Muslim worshippers held Taraweeh prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem's Old City on Thursday, the second night of the holy month of Ramadan.

Footage shows worshippers praying by the Al Aqsa Mosque, outside the Dome of the Rock as the imam leads the prayers.

Ramadan began on Thursday as believers entered a month-long dawn-to-dusk fast which aims to bring them closer to God.

Many believers strictly observe prayers, recite the Quran and give alms during this month. This period is also an opportunity for families to come together for the annual observance.

This year’s Ramadan comes amid fears of violence as the region has seen heightened tensions in recent weeks, with at least 62 Palestinians and 14 on Israelis killed during conflict in the territory.
