France: Clashes as thousands march against pension reform in Nantes
Clashes erupted between French police and protesters in Nantes, as thousands marched against the government’s pension reforms on Tuesday.
Footage features protesters letting off fireworks and throwing projectiles, as well as police officers firing tear gas canisters to control and disperse the crowds. Graffiti can be seen reading 'Happy 49.3', a reference to the executive power used to pass the changes without a vote in the National Assembly.
Despite weeks of protests and strikes over the plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, President Emmanuel Macron’s government forced through the changes and survived two separate no-confidence votes on Monday.
According to local reports, hundreds of protesters were detained during rallies across the country.
