Employees of the Russian EMERCOM and Astrakhan Nature Reserve fire service along with volunteers extinguished a fire in the Obzhorovsky section of the nature conservation area, as could be seen in the footage, released on Saturday.

According to the Governor of Astrakhan Region Igor Babushkin, the fire was spotted by the Reserve's staff on Wednesday and was extinguished throughout the week.

During this time, the fire spread over an area of about 12,850 hectares. A total of 25 people and 16 vehicles were involved in putting out the fire and its aftermath.

According to Babushkin, the firefighters managed to save the most valuable parts of the reserve, where the main bird nesting and animal habitats are located.

The cause of the fire is still currently under investigation. According to the preliminary probe, the fire was the result of human activity, Babushkin added.
