Hundreds of flights were cancelled at the Stuttgart Airport on Friday due to a workers' strike led by the ver.di Trade Union.

Footage recorded in the facility showed airport staff members walking inside the empty airport holding flags and banners.

According to local media, ver.di demands a 10.5 per cent pay rise, or at least an increase of €500 per month, for the public sector and aviation security employees the union represents.

Local reports claim that approximately 20,000 passengers were affected by the strike on Friday. A dozen of flights were relocated to other airports such as Munich, Nuremberg, Memmingen and Friedrichshafen, and passengers were carried to the new departure locations by bus.

On Monday, another workers' strike called by ver.di affected hundreds of flights at Berlin airport. Negotiations continue nationwide over air safety workers' pay, and locally for ground service workers.
