
France: 'We will intensify the mobilizations' - Police charges at protesters at new rally against pension reforms in Nantes
Thousands of protesters joined the unions in a large rally against the government's pension reform in Nantes on Saturday.
Clashes broke out between police and some of the demonstrators as tensions escalated. Police used tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
"We will intensify the mobilisation, the more the government refuses to listen to the demands, the more the blockade will intensify," declared the secretary general of the Solidaires union in the department, Mathilde Perrache.
The pension system reform introduced by the French government includes the the raising of the retirement age from 62 to 64, which provoked massive protests and strikes in the last two months.
