France: ‘Our government is not listening’ - Protesters shatter storefronts, clash with police at rally against pension reform in Lyon
Protest against the new pension reform turned into conflict in Lyon on Saturday, as demonstrators broke different store entrances and threw objects at police officers.
Footage shows thousands marching along the streets of the city carrying flags and signs, while other protesters were recorded damaging several stores and throwing objects at police officers, who responded by firing tear gas. According to the organisation, 18,000 people joined the demonstration.
“Our government is not listening and does not hear our voice. They do not want to back off, and I think that we are no longer a democracy but a 'democraship'”, said Christine, one of the demonstrators.
Protests sparked across France after the government announced a new pension reform draft which would raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.
