East Jerusalem: 'Free Palestine' - Leftist groups protest in support of Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah
Dozens of left-wing Israeli activists organised a demonstration in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem against the displacement of the people already settled in the district, Friday.
The demonstrators maintained a critical stance and rejection of the displacement policy practiced by the Israeli army authorities against the Sheikh Jarrah area.
Sheikh Jarrah is home to some 300 Palestinians, who face the possibility of being evicted from their homes by Israeli authorities.
Footage features people marching and chanting "Free, free Palestine" while the Police are watching.
"I protested against the fact that Jews can't get their homes back here in Sheikh Jarrah while Arabs can't get their homes back in the other neighbourhoods in Jerusalem," commented a protester.
The Israeli inhabitants maintain a rigid attitude and claim ownership of the Palestinian houses in the neighborhood, alleging that Jewish residents lived in them in the last decades of the 19th century.
Sheikh Jarrah has been a major flashpoint since May 2021, after Israel attempted to expel Palestinian families from the area.
Currently, more than 200,000 settlers are living in East Jerusalem, alongside some 300,000 native Palestinian residents.
