'I am amazed at the dedication of the doctors and nurses' - St. Petersburg physicians assist colleagues in Donestk
A group of doctors from St. Petersburg have been on a month-long mission to the DPR helping their colleagues in Donetsk to carry out several surgical operations a day, as seen in footage captured on Saturday.
Head of General Emergency Surgery at the First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg Andrey Korolkov said that a team consisting of a surgeon, an anaesthetist and two trauma surgeons arrived in the republic on 10 February.
"Here we are dealing with a completely different category of casualty. They are mine blast trauma victims, a special group of wounded people who have combined injuries not only to the abdominal cavity but usually to the thoracic cavity, the central nervous system and the limbs," he said.
Korolkov also shared said that a week ago a wounded soldier was brought to the hospital with an 'undetonated mine in the right buttock area', adding surgeons were forced to wear body armour and helmets during an operation to remove the explosive device.
"Thank God everything turned out to be a success for both the wounded man and the surgeons," the doctor said.
The Head of Anaesthetic and Intensive Care Unit 2 Alexander Khryapa added that he was impressed with the work of doctors in Donetsk.
"I am amazed at the dedication of the doctors and nurses who provide care. The care is provided at a very high level," he said.
Khryapa added that St. Petersburg physicians share their experience with their colleagues in Donetsk, 'provide organisational and methodological assistance' and 'practically take part in operations and anaesthesia.'
The Donetsk People's Republic is one of four regions, also including the Lugansk People's Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye, that President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow to join the Russian Federation, signing accession documents on September 30, 2022.
According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.
Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
