'Xiang Xiang is like the sun for us’ - Tokyo zoo bids farewell as giant panda leaves for China
Dozens of fans of Xiang Xiang the giant panda gathered in front of Ueno Zoo in Tokyo to bid her farewell on Tuesday, ahead of the animal’s journey to China.
Footage shows emotional fans, many carrying toy pandas, waving goodbye as the transport vehicle left the facility.
"Xiang Xiang is like the sun for us, always cheering us up and making us cheerful, and even when I was in a difficult situation, I would look at Xiang Xiang's face and watch her videos on Youtube, which helped me to forget all the bad things," said Takei Chieko, one of those present.
Xiang Xiang was born in Japan in 2017, but her parents Ri Ri and Shin Shin were on loan from China and the pandas belong to Beijing under the terms of the original agreement.
60,000 reportedly applied for tickets to say farewell at the zoo on Sunday, with 2,600 getting the chance to see her for the final time.
