Dozens of volunteers working with the Animal Rights Federation (HAYTAP) have created a field hospital in Hatay to rehabilitate pets rescued from the rubble following last week’s catastrophic earthquakes, as seen in footage captured on Friday.

The rescue volunteers, who come from all over the region, participate in search and rescue efforts in quake-hit areas and treat the animals they find in the debris of collapsed buildings. They also take in injured or lost pets found by others.

"We established a field hospital. Here we make the first intervention of the animals that are freed from the rubble. If they are in good condition, we provide them with transportation to surrounding provinces," explained Zuhal Arslan, a HAYTAP field manager.

“Those whose owners did not die are also victims. Because they can't find food, there is no water. Everything such as toilet bowls, food bowls, transport containers, etc., has fallen under the rubble. Those who are not dead, are under our protection,” she added.

At least 43,000 people are reported to have died with more than 105,000 injured as thousands of buildings collapsed in the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that rocked Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Adıyaman, Gaziantep, Malatya, Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, Kilis, Adana and Osmaniye on February 6.

Nearly 196,000 people have been evacuated from the quake-hit regions so far, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said.
