Dutch artist turns 6,000 dolls into Vermeer's iconic 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' painting
The Vermeer Centre in Delft hosts a recreation of 'Girl with the Pearl Earring' made of 6,000 pre-coloured dolls glued together. The author of the artwork, artist Rene Jacobs, shared the process of creating this masterpiece with Ruptly.
"It took me about 12 days, and I've painted and glued them one by one, day after day, so it seems like a lot longer when I think about it now because I've felt like I was glueing forever," the artist said. "Halfway, I was really doubting and thinking this is not going to work at all because I only did the black and the dark parts, and I didn't see any consciousness. I didn't see any girl coming up, and then, when I started doing the face, all of a sudden, I started realising this is going to work," he added.
Jacobs revealed that his work symbolises the iconicity of Vermeer's painting.
"She is owned by nobody. She's everybody's possession. Nobody owns the 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', not one museum, person, or organization; everybody owns the 'Girl with a Pearl Earring," the artist explained.
