Russia: 'Crimea's security is fully guaranteed, but Donbass is not yet fully protected' - Peskov on Ukraine's new assault brigades
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stated that 'Crimea's security is fully guaranteed, but Donbass is not yet fully protected’, speaking with journalists on Friday.
Peskov answered in response to the Ukrainian Acting Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko's statement on the formation of assault brigades to seize territories in Crimea and Donbass.
"Donbass is not yet fully protected and therefore the special military operation continues. We must protect the people who live there, and so far this goal has not been fully achieved. This has yet to be done. Crimea, like Donbass, is a region of the Russian Federation, so Crimea's security is fully guaranteed," Kremlin spokesperson claimed.
Dmitri Peskov also called 'a hoax' the information that last November the CIA (US Central Intelligence Agency) offered to hand over 20 per cent of Ukraine's territory to Russia in exchange for Moscow ceasing its special military operation.
On Thursday, Ukraine's Acting Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko claimed the Ukrainian Interior Ministry was staffing voluntary assault brigades of the 'Offensive Guards' to take part in the liberation of the LPR, the DPR and Crimea.
Klymenko also noted that the units would be based on volunteers from active and former military, border guards and police officers with combat experience.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
