Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Libya on Saturday, where a historic gas deal was signed between Italian oil producer ENI and its Libyan partner.

The two sides said they would invest USD 8 billion in gas development, solar energy, and carbon capture, according to media reports. The deal is the most significant single investment in Libya's energy sector over two decades.

The signing comes amid Europe's desire to diversify its energy sources and move away from dependence on Russian supplies.

Also, during Giorgia Meloni's meeting with her Libyan counterpart Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibeh, the problems of immigration were discussed.

According to Giorgia Meloni, "In terms of regular entries in Italy, we're talking about 50 per cent of arrivals from Libya. We think we must intensify forces against this flow and human trafficking."

Earlier this week, Meloni visited another African country, Algeria, where a cooperation agreement to strengthen energy security was also signed.
