Germany: Replica of Alexei Navalny’s 'prison cell' appears near Russian Embassy in Berlin
A protest exhibition against the jailing of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny - featuring a supposed recreation of his prison cell - was seen outside the country’s embassy in Berlin on Tuesday.
"He is in a chamber-type room" claimed Alexei’s brother, Oleg."He is105 days in a 'shizo' (penalty isolation) …That is the image that we, with the group, with the creative team, recreated."
Footage shows the small room, with a bed, washbasin, toilet, radiator and small window. A group of protesters holding signs including 'freedom for Navalny' are also seen, as Oleg and Leonid Volkov, president of Navalny organisation, addressed the crowd.
"Alexei Navalny's story after August 20, 2020, was known to the whole world," stated Volkov. "It’s a heroic story. He was poisoned, he got out, he recovered, he went to Russia, he was imprisoned, and he is sitting there in torture conditions."
"We call on the entire public to join the campaign to free Alexei Navalny and other political prisoners both in Europe and in Russia around the world," Oleg added.
Alexei Navalny is serving nine-year sentence after being convicted of fraud and contempt of court last year. He was already in prison for a parole violation, and argues that all the charges are attempts to silence him.
Moscow claims his imprisonment is related to criminal behaviour, rather than political activity. Russian authorities have strongly denied any involvement in his alleged poisoning in 2020, when he was taken ill on a flight from Siberia to Moscow.
