Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said his country was looking to increase trade and look for 'new directions' with Turkmenistan, as he met with President Serdar Berdimuhamedow and Speaker of the Upper House of Parliament Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow on the sidelines of the Russian-Turkmen Business Forum in Ashgabat on Friday.

"The most important thing is to increase our trade and economic co-operation, turnover. Approximately the volume of trade for the year we have is about a billion dollars. This is not enough, we believe that it does not correspond to the potential that Turkmenistan and the Russian Federation have. Of course, we will be looking for new directions in all areas today," Mishustin said.

The Russian Prime Minister also stressed that relations between Russia and Turkmenistan were based on the principles of friendship, good neighbourliness and mutual respect.

In turn, President Berdimuhamedow thanked Mishustin for "constant attention to strengthening bilateral relations" between the countries.

The Russian-Turkmen Business Forum is being held in Ashgabat on January 19 and 20.
