Iraq would be a welcome supplier of oil and gas for Germany, said the country’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani in Berlin on Friday.

Speaking during a joint press conference with al-Sudani, Scholz stated "We are still a long, long way away from overcapacities, but we are on the right track to guaranteeing sufficiently large, comprehensive capacities. Of course, we also want to take advantage of a wide range of import options on this occasion. Unlike in the past, we will not make ourselves dependent on individual suppliers, but will mobilize many others with whom we will cooperate closely, and Iraq would be a very welcome cooperation partner for us when it comes to importing gas and oil to Germany."

He also commented on the country’s plans to use hydrogen as a new energy source, saying as „we have looked at with Norway, gas can also be used to produce hydrogen and then store the CO2 on site, this is what Federal Minister Habeck discussed in Norway. We will be able to proceed accordingly in many other places and at the same time produce hydrogen via electrolysis in this country. And by the way, we will expand renewable energies in Germany in such a way that we can guarantee a CO2-neutral industry in 2045.“

Al-Sudani added that Iraq’s gas and oil sectors are of vital importance for the country’s economy saying „These aspects are. very important for creating job opportunities and securing the needs of Iraq and the region. Iraq is a country with enormous natural resources and human resources capable of being a hub for the economy in the region and the world."
