The opening ceremony for the 39th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, dubbed '60 years of ice and snow, a new journey together' was held at the Harbin Ice and Snow World Park on Thursday.

Footage shows thousands of people strolling between brightly coloured ice sculptures, spending time on rides and riding special bikes at the ice rink.

"Because I live in another city in China and have never been to Harbin Ice and Snow World, I heard that this year's Harbin Ice Festival is particularly beautiful, so I came with my friends," said Hao Rui, a tourist.

Many took the opportunity to visit following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions across the countries last month.

"Everyone will wear a mask and will protect themselves, so there will be no worry about the epidemic," explained Gao Jingi, another visitor.

The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is the first international festival in China's history, and is known as the 'pearl in the crown of ice and snow'. It was founded in 1985, lasting for one month, and is now visited by people all over the world.
