Oman: Exceptional Bronze Age settlement found at Al-Gharyan site
Archaeologists from Sultan Qaboos University led by Dr Nasser Al-Jahuri announced an outstanding discovery in the first days of 2023; a 5,000-year-old settlement at the Al Gharyein archaeological site in Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi, in the Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate.
They reported that the site showed traces of the Hafeet and Umm Al Nar cultures, suggesting that the discovery dates from the early Bronze Age.
"Among the archaeological findings, it seems to contain comprehensive agricultural tools, copper melting, tombs, and a settlement. In addition to that, there are other nearby archaeological sites, including the Al-Khashabah site and the Wadi Al-Salil site", said Saeed Al-Naabi, Officer of the Department of Heritage and Tourism in the North Sharqiyah Governorate.
Umm Al Nar (Mother of the Fire) is a Bronze Age culture that existed around 2600-2000 BCE in the area of modern-day United Arab Emirates and Northern Oman.
