Unseasonably warm temperatures came to Marseille on Sunday as the port city rang in the New Year, with locals seen rolling up their sleeves and enjoying the sunshine.
"Today can get as warm as 20 degrees (Celsius, 68 degrees Fahrenheit)," said one resident, who attributed the mild weather to "climate change and global warming".
Other cities also saw higher temperatures than expected, with Frankfurt, for example, 10 degrees above normal for the New Year.
"It’s almost spectacular since normally at this moment of the year it should be around 10 or 11 degrees, so the point is that there is a huge global warming," stressed another Marseille local.
The mild weather is expected to ease pressures on western European power grids, after an initial stress due to a cold snap in December.
