Thousands take to the streets in Calabar to participate and watch the annual carnival, as footage filmed on Wednesday shows.

Event participants can be seen marching in clourful costumes while numerous spectators watch and cheer them.

The annual carnival is held in Cross River State every December for a whole month. The tradition began in 2004 when Governor Donald Duke decided to boost local tourism and organised the carnival.

Calabar Carnival which is believed to be Africa’s best carnival is a month-long celebration filled with exciting events. The highlight of the event is the street parade that features the battle of the bands. According to organisers, the parade is only a slither of the carnival's attractions. There are ceremonies, concerts, art shows, street parties, masque events, sporting events and non-stop parties.

Earlier on Tuesday, at least 14 people were killed and over 20 others injured after a vehicle rammed into a crowd of onlookers at a popular bikers' carnival in Calabar.

The driver is said to have lost control of his car and ploughed into the crowd before fleeing the scene, local media said.
