French serial killer Charles ‘The Serpent’ Sobhraj was released from a Nepalese prison on Friday, after serving a 19-year sentence.

“The Supreme Court of Nepal decided to release him on the basis of Nepal's prison regulations that provide for up to 75 per cent discount in prison term if he has good conduct, so he has good conduct, the government has already said it. so the supreme court released him,” Sobhraj’s lawyer said.

The 78-year-old who inspired an award-winning Netflix series had been serving a life sentence in Kathmandu for the killing of two backpackers in 1975. Sobhraj was also accused of killing over a dozen others.

Sobhraj was released and deported to France over fears for his health. He is reportedly suffering from heart disease and needs surgery.

"They wanted to deport him as soon as possible, they didn't want to keep him here for his safety reason, security reason, and also for his health reason and that was genuine,” Sobhraj’s lawyer said.

“I asked Charles Sobhraj whether he wants to fly now or he wants to stay here for a few days. And he said no no no no no no I want to fly now, I don’t want to stay in Nepal and I don’t want to talk anything with the media,” he added.

Sobhraj, nicknamed, 'The Serpent' for his notoriety as an escape artist, reportedly killed his victims after offering them drugs. He would then rob and murder them.

The alleged serial killer is the subject of a Netflix series called 'The Serpent' which was released in 2021. He has now been banned from returning to Nepal for 10 years.
