Chinese artist follows world trends carving portraits of football players on piece of tofu
Chinese artist Wang Weiting used his skills to follow trending topics in a special way. He payed tribute to legendary football player Cristiano Ronaldo by creating his portrait on a piece of tofu, as seen in footage filmed in Hangzhou on Thursday.
"I have been creating artwork with different materials over the past few years, including peanuts, melon seeds, lipstick and so on. And tofu is also one of them. Recently, World Cup is a trending topic and I like these excellent athletes, such as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo very much," shared Wang Weiting.
Chinese artist explained that he chooses the material of moderate hardness because it is impossible to carve delicate details if tofu is too soft or too firm.
"The biggest challenge in tofu carving is the handling of details, especially the small areas such as eyes and teeth. Large areas are easier to carve. But when it comes to the eyes, you will need to leave a highlight of the white of eyes. If not handled well, you may need to start from the very beginning," he said.
Wang Weiting is not working with edible materials for the first time. Earlier Chinese artist used an innovative biting technique to create portraits from apples.
