Spain: 'Part of Ukraine is coming here' - Open-air exhibition 'Stone by Stone' shines light on conflict's impact on children

The 'Stone by Stone' open-air exhibition, composed of materials collected by the NGO 'Global Humanitaria' from the 'Pinocchio' school in the city of Borodyanka, came to Retiro Park in Madrid on Tuesday.

The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the impact and effects of war on children, according to Deputy Mayor of Madrid Begona Villacis.

"What we are trying to do with this initiative is to fight against society becoming immunised against what is happening in Ukraine, we run the risk of forgetting about it, it is no longer seen so much in the news and obviously I do not think that people from Madrid will go to Ukraine, but what I do find it very interesting that a part of Ukraine is coming here," Begona Villacis.

Footage shows partly burnt desks, chairs and other school utensils, alongside rubble and other damaged school items collected by the 'Global Humanitaria' team, following reports of shelling in the city.

"The part we have chosen to bring is a nursery school, the current state of a Ukrainian nursery school so that people can see what has become of that school where you leave your children, as if it were a refuge, how they are capable of attacking and assaulting and violating even what is most sacred," Villacis added.

Russia has consistently denied targeting civilian locations and infrastructure; its Defence Ministry has reported 'high-precision' strikes on military targets, as well as energy infrastructure used by Ukrainian forces.

The exhibition will be on display at El Retiro Park until 28 December, and will then go on display in other Spanish cities over the next year.
