Italy: 'United against war' - Clashes erupt with police during right-wing rally, counter protest on streets of Milan

Up to 200 people reportedly took part in a rally organised by the right-wing Lealta e Azione (Loyalty and Action) movement in Milan on Sunday.

Footage features demonstrators waving Italian flags, holding banners with messages opposing war, calling for peace talks and carrying lit torches.

"This is a serious commitment by Italy to find a truce between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples," said Gianni Alemanno, spokesman for the Committee 'Fermare la Guerra' (Stop the War Committee) and former Mayor of Rome. "At certain times, it is necessary to unite all the Italian people across the parties to defend the national interest and to get out of a very dangerous situation that can take us towards the Third World War",

A counter-protest with reportedly 500 people joining it was organised later in the day.

"A clear and determined response against the pseudo-pacifist demonstration by Loyalty and Action. A shameful thing in a gold medal city of the Resistance like Milan", said Onorio Rosati, Milanese coordinator of the Sinistra Italiana party.

Footage also features police in riot gear clashing with rally participants when the two marches came close together.
