
Italy: 'Mediterranean represents the backbone of energy security' - PM Meloni
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the Mediterranean 'the backbone of energy security', at the closing ceremony of Mediterranean Dialogue (MED) conference, in Rome, on Saturday.
"Italy is and can be much more than this, can be a natural energy bridge between Mediterranean and Europe. This is one of the most relevant strategic challenges that this government is willing to accept and on which we are working a lot by virtue of a strategic position that we have … The Mediterranean area represents the backbone of energy security, it generates approximately 45% of the natural gas imports today."," she said.
Meloni stressed that 'the Russian aggression against Ukraine' creates a demand for 'an extended understanding of the concept of security'.
"If you want to built security today, we have to resort to an extended understanding of the concept of security, which embodies political solutions, institutional consolidation, civil rebuilding, yet it also involves and embodies actions to preserve the human dimension," Italian Prime Minister concluded.
The Mediterranean Dialogue conference took place on Friday and Saturday, bringing together leaders of government, business and civil society in the region.
