Eight people were detained over the theft of a mural painted by the elusive graffiti artist Banksy in the outskirts of Kiev on Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Footage captured in Hostomel on Saturday shows the exposed brickwork on the wall of a scorched building where the artwork depicting a person in a nightgown and gas mask holding a fire extinguisher once stood.

Police are yet to release the identities of the suspects. They stand accused of removing the plaster from the building in an attempt to loot the stencil image.

According to Oleksiy Kuleba, governor of the Kiev region, the mural was retrieved and was still intact. It is now under police protection.
