Mikheil Saakashvili's supporters rallied outside the office of the ruling Georgian Dream party in Tbilisi on Saturday to demand the release of the ex-president and his further treatment abroad.

Footage features hundreds of protesters holding Georgian, Ukrainian, and US flags chanting slogans and holding placards saying: 'Freedom to Misha!' and 'Don't Kill!'.

According to media reports, representatives of the opposition United National Movement party, founded by Saakashvili, also took part in the rally.

Law enforcement officials can be seen guarding the event, no arrests were reported.

Earlier, the media reported that the politician's mother, Giuli Alasania, had claimed that Saakashvili had tested positive for heavy metals, including mercury.

The Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia claimed it had not received a report confirming the fact of poisoning.

"Prisoner Saakashvili has been under constant medical supervision at the hospital for several months and is receiving necessary medical treatment. We urge everyone not to spread unverified, unconfirmed information," the agency said.

On Thursday, medical experts from the Empathy Rehabilitation Centre for Victims of Torture published a report stating that the politician's condition was assessed as 'incompatible with imprisonment'.

"Mikheil Saakashvili must not remain in the current institution, or under imprisonment since we consider it impossible to conduct a complete toxicological study in these facilities; it is necessary to timely diagnose toxic agents, including chemical compounds and radioactive substances, otherwise, given the probability of intoxication, the condition may lead to coma and death", the report said.

Saakashvili's lawyer Shalva Khachapuridze has applied to the court for the ex-president's release due to the politician's health condition, according to media reports.

Saakashvili was detained on October 1, 2021, upon his return to Georgia. Earlier, the ex-president was put on the national wanted list in cases of membership in the club of the banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valeria Gelashvili, according to the terms; he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years of freedom, respectively. Saakashvili is also accused of seizing the state's border and brutally dispersing the protesters.

Since May, the politician has been in the Vivamed clinic in Tbilisi, where he was taken from the Rustavi prison for medical examinations. The politician's health reportedly deteriorated after a long hunger strike in prison.
