Fans of the Qatari national football team were disappointed after their World Cup journey ended on Tuesday with a 2-0 defeat for the hosts by the Netherlands in Al Khor.

"I think they should do better; we expected more from them," said Adel, a Qatar supporter, but was optimistic that the squad would "do better in the next World Cups".

Other fans said they hoped the team qualifies for future competitions and that the side's first World Cup was a good experience to build on.

The team were officially eliminated from following a 3-1 defeat to Senegal last Friday, although the game made history with Qatar scoring their first goal of the tournament.

In their three group stage games against the African champions, Ecuador and the Netherlands, Qatar scored a single goal and conceded seven, officially becoming the worst-performing World Cup host nation since the introduction of the competition in 1930.
