'The windows were blown out' - Local recounts shelling of residential building in Donetsk
The Voroshilovsky district of Donetsk was shelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU), as reported on Sunday on the Telegram channel of the DPR representation to the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to Ukrainian War Crimes (JCCC).
"JCCC military experts from the DPR confirmed the shelling of the Voroshilovsky district with the use of BM-21 Grad MLRS," the message reads.
The DPR representative in the JCCC added that 'damage was recorded at 14 addresses', including a 'direct hit to the roof of an apartment building at Pushkina Boulevard, 16'.
Footage features the roof of a residential building damaged in a direct hit, broken windows, as well as janitors cleaning up debris.
According to resident Arkady, he was in the kitchen at the time of the shelling.
"[I] was in the kitchen, just heating up some soup. Then as it rumbled, I immediately sat down, so I just [started] to get up. When the second [rumble] occurred, I sat down again," the man said.
He also noted that none of his neighbours were hurt, but 'the windows are blown out'.
The Ukrainian side had not officially commented on the incident at the time of publication.
However, according to the 6 p.m. daily evening briefing by the General Staff of the AFU, the Russian side continued its offensive in the Bakhmut and Avdeevka directions.
"In the Bakhmut and Avdiivka areas, the enemy continues to focus its main efforts on conducting offensive operations. It caused fire damage in the areas of Spornoye, Yakovlevka, Bakhmutskoye, Bakhmut, Kleshcheevka, Andreevka, Kurdyumovka, Avdeevka, Vodyanoe, Pervomaiskoye, Krasnogorovka, Maryinka, and Novomikhailovka settlements in the Donetsk region," the message reads.
The JCCC was an organisation set up in 2014 to monitor ceasefire violations, and was originally composed of Ukrainian and Russian military officers, although the latter withdrew in 2017. JCCC offices of the LPR and DPR were unilaterally created and still work in the area.
On September 30, President Vladimir Putin agreed to sign documents allowing the accession of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, to the Russian Federation.
According to Moscow, the move followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.
Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
Moscow launched the military offensive in Ukraine earlier this year, after recognising the independence of the LPR and DPR.
Kiev condemned the action, while President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered martial law and full mobilisation in February.
