
China: Police on Shanghai streets during protests against COVID-19 restrictions
Police officers were seen on the streets of Shanghai on Sunday, after hundreds of locals joined protests over strict COVID-19 measures and a deadly blaze at a residential block in in Xinjiang province.
Footage shows officers standing in a line across the road, with activists in front of them holding placards. Other locals were seen walking towards a protest where chanting could be heard.
Some protesters believe Thursday’s fire in Urumqi was exacerbated by COVID-19 lockdown measures.
However, Chinese media reports suggested the area was classified as 'low risk' with those inside allowed to come and go.
Beijing has recorded new daily records of COVID-19 cases in recent days, with 39,791 on Saturday. The country has seen almost three years of strict measures, including lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing.
