Honduras: Military police in Tegucigalpa as country is under state of emergency over gang activity
Anti-drug police and military forces can be seen present in Tegucigalpa as the country is under a state of emergency over gang activity.
Footage filmed on Saturday features the stepped-up presence of military forces in different spots of Tegucigalpa checking buses, cars, and motorbike taxis as well as body-searching.
Honduran President Xiomara Castro declared a state of emergency on Thursday and urged police to recover public spaces 'assaulted and controlled by organised crime and its gangs'.
"In reality, insecurity has always been there. Whether or not there is a military," one of the residents said.
The president's decision came after hundreds of truckers protested in the capital to demand the government take steps to stop gangs from extorting a 'war tax' from them.
