China: COVID19 lockdown imposed in Zhengzhou amid record-high rise in cases

Authorities in Zhengzhou imposed a lockdown for several districts on Thursday following a rise in COVID19 infections in the area.

Footage shot inside a local supermarket showed the impact of customers’ panic buying, leaving many shelves empty, while streets could be seen deserted.

The lockdown was imposed in eight districts affecting over 6.5 million people, who were ordered to stay home for five days, except for buying food or seeking medical assistance. China reported a record number of daily COVID19 infections with 31,444 new cases recorded on Wednesday.

The measures came after fierce protests erupted at the city's Foxconn facility, a factory for Apple’s iPhone, over a reported pay dispute earlier in the week.
