Venice's system of floodgates, the 'Mose' project, was able to shield the city's historic St Mark's Square from exceptionally high tides on Tuesday, as heavy rains swept across Italy.

Floods did sweep through the popular beaches of Chioggia and Sotomarina, flooding streets, buildings and entire stretches of sandy shores.

It marks the third time in the past 100 years that tide levels have reached a record level in the Italian city, with weather bulletins forecasting a tide of 170 cm (5.58 feet).
