USA: 'Fraud, tax evasion, money laundering’ - Republicans to investigate Biden family as White House rejects 'conspiracy theory'

Republicans in the House of Representatives announced an investigation into the US President, with congressman James Comer accusing Joe Biden and family of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering, among other crimes, during a press conference on Thursday.

"Protecting the president’s son (Hunter Biden) who has committed crimes with Americans’ tax dollars is a waste, the domestic and international scheme that promised access to wealth in a future Biden administration constitute fraud and the president’s participation in unreaching his family is, in a word, abuse," Comer alleged.

Comer and his colleague Jim Jordan are set to chair the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees in the next Congress. It comes after Republicans picked up seats in the chamber at the November midterms, taking control from the Democrats by a narrow majority.

"Committee Republicans have uncovered evidence of federal crimes committed by, and to the benefit of members of the president’s family," Comer continued. "These include conspiracy or defrauding the United States, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, violation of the Foreign Agent Registration Act, violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, violations of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, tax evasion, money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering."

Biden’s son Hunter is at the heart of the case, with the investigation focusing on his overseas business dealings. He is under federal investigation although has not faced any charges, has denied breaking any laws and is not involved in government.

The White House has called the investigation a conspiracy theory and claims it is politically motivated. Joe Biden himself has also denied any wrongdoing and has described possible impeachment proceedings against him as 'almost comedy'.
