US: 'Rarity is the word'- Sotheby's proud to auction 8 fancy vivid blue diamonds
US-based jeweller Sotheby’s presented on Wednesday in New York City "The De Beers Exceptional Blue Collection,” a superb group of eight rare fancy blue diamonds, valued together at more than 70 million US dollars (71.48 million euros).
Frank Everett, senior vice president for jewelry at Sotheby’, said that the top among the fancy blue diamonds weighs 11.29 carats, is expected to be valued between 28 and 50 million dollars (28.5 and 51 million euros) and will come to auction next year.
The vice president also said that the occurrence of a gem-quality blue diamond of any size is rare, so having the opportunity to offer eight dazzling blues in a variety of shapes and weights is “exceptional”.
He added that the blue diamonds have a unique property, as they need to be kept in natural light for a few minutes before their vivid blue colour is visible if they have been kept in the dark.
Sotheby's said that the diamonds were recovered from the historic Cullinan mine in South Africa.
The diamonds are available in different shapes and sizes for buyers and collectors. Sotheby's will present the dazzling blue diamonds in its Magnificent Jewels auctions in New York, Geneva and Hong Kong beginning in November through the Spring of 2023.
