Students at Izhevsk School No. 88 spoke about the shooting that took place on Monday morning, which left at least 17 dead and 24 wounded.

According to one girl, when it started the students hid under their desks. She added that students spent about half an hour barricaded in the classroom, but it felt like an 'eternity'.

"Sat there quietly, everyone's legs were shaking," she explained.

Another pupil said he heard the sound of gunfire during a maths test.

"When I had finished the exercise, a shot rang out, there were two shots. And we were immediately told to close all the doors and barricade [ourselves in the classroom]," he added.

A third student recalled how they were escorted out of the building.

"We went out, there were the remains of the stores, we ran, somebody's shoes were there. [We] all ran, all the steps were covered in blood. To be honest, we were very scared. [I] sat there for a long time, shaking," he said.

According to the Udmurt Republic`s press office, 17 people were killed, including 11 children, during the attack.

The Russian Investigative Committee named the attacker as Artem Kazantsev, a former pupil born in 1988, who committed suicide at the scene. His home has also been searched.

"The identity of the attacker, his views and surroundings are being studied. His adherence to neo-fascist views and Nazi ideology is being checked," the department stated. It also opened a criminal case on 'the murder of two or more persons, including minors'.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his sympathy to the families and friends of the victims.

"The President expresses deep condolences to everyone who lost their loved ones, their children in this tragedy, and wishes a recovery to those who were injured as a result of this inhuman terrorist act," the Kremlin's press service said.

A three-day mourning period has been declared in Udmurtia..
