A funeral was held on Sunday in Latakia for those Syrian migrants who were among nearly 100 reported killed when a boat sank off the port of Tartus on Thursday.

Syrian state television said the number of dead had risen to 94 on Saturday. The vessel left Lebanon on Tuesday carrying Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian migrants.

The incident is the deadliest of its kind so far, with between 120-150 people believed to have been onboard.

Lebanese authorities said they had detained a man who allegedly organised the crossing. Increasing numbers are attempting to leave the country by sea, with Lebanon gripped by an economic crisis of soaring inflation, sky-high unemployment and poverty.
