The alleged gunman in the failed shooting of Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner appears to be seen in the back of a police car outside her home in Buenos Aires on Thursday evening.

Footage also shows the car driving away surrounded by a police guard, as well as a cordon around the house, a forensics team on site, and crowds gathering at the location.

“Cristina crouched down, Cristina crouched down because he [the attacker] put the revolver in front of her, and when she saw it she crouched down, and then security reduced it (stepped in), the person is in custody," said one witness.

According to President Alberto Fernandez, who addressed the nation shortly after the incident, Kirchner was unharmed after a man tried to fire a pistol, containing five bullets, at point-blank range outside her house.

The gun is believed to have jammed, while Buenos Aires police say a suspect, identified by the country’s official news agency as 35-year-old Brazilian Fernando Andre Sabag Montiel, has been arrested in connection with the attack.

Kirchner’s home has been the subject of an intense police operation in recent weeks, with clashes between the authorities and her supporters.

She is currently on trial for corruption, which she strongly denies, while a verdict is expected by the end of the year.
