Hundreds gathered outside the home of Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner in Buenos Aires on Thursday evening and into the early hours of Friday morning, following an attempt on the life of the politician.

Footage shows the crowds singing and chanting, as a line of federal police officers in riot gear maintained a cordon close to the incident.

Kirchner was unharmed after an assailant tried to fire a pistol, containing five bullets, at point-blank range.

The gun is believed to have jammed, while Buenos Aires police say a man, identified by local media as a 35-year-old Brazilian, has been arrested in connection with the attack.

Kirchner’s home has been the subject of an intense police operation in recent weeks, with clashes between the authorities and her supporters.

She is currently on trial for corruption, with prosecutors seeking a 12-year jail sentence and a ban from public office if she’s found guilty.

The vice president strongly denies the charges, while a verdict is expected by the end of the year.
