The 'Galaktika' shopping mall in Donetsk was attacked, as the DPR Territorial Defence Headquarters said on its Telegram channel on Wednesday.

Footage features thick black smoke rising over the shopping mall following the attack.

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the area of the 'Galaktika' shopping mall, located on Shutova Street in Kirovsky district of Donetsk," the DPR Territorial Defence Headquarters reported.

According to the department, the building's roof and facade were damaged and pallets of building materials caught fire.

Donetsk mayor Alexei Kulemzin also reported on a direct shell hit at the 'Galaktika' shopping mall.

"Information on casualties and extent of damage is being clarified," Kulemzin said on his Telegram channel.

The Ukrainian side has not yet made any official comments regarding the incident.

Moscow launched a military offensive on Ukraine in late February after recognising the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics' independence (DPR and LPR).

Kiev has denounced the Russian offensive into its territory, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation.

During recent peace talks, Russia has required that Ukraine declares itself officially a neutral country, providing guarantees that it will never join NATO.
