A local farmer in Yuncheng has made great efforts to develop modern agriculture and showcased the fruits of his labour on Tuesday as the harvest season began.

At present, the Xiaxian county has planted more than 20 Square kilometres of watermelons in high-quality facilities. Wang Chunzhi, a local farmer, began picking the watermelons in three batches each year. The first batch is about 6000 jin, the second batch is about 5000 jin, and the third batch is about 4000 jin. The selling price is basically around 2 yuan per jin, and the price has been stable in recent years.

“Our watermelons are mainly famous by its thin skin and thick meat, it’s very crispy and sweet. In order to ensure the quality of watermelons, we plant watermelons only once a decade in each farm field,” said Li Rong, another local farmer said.

Du, a fruit seller from Beijing, said that he has been here to buy watermelons for a long time. It has been more than six years since they came to Xiaxian County to buy watermelons and resell back to Beijing.

The watermelon industry has become an important pillar industry for local farmers to increase their income.
