State of Palestine: 'Arab nation have lost a very large stature' - Pastor at funeral of Shireen Abu Akleh

Thousands of Palestinians gathered for the funeral service of the Al Jazeera reporter before her body is taken to the Mount Zion Protestant Cemetery to be buried on Friday.

Footage shows people with wreaths and Palestinian flags.

"The Palestinian people and the Arab nation have lost a very large stature, which defended the freedom of the Palestinian people and freedom of speech, and she is our martyr, all of us, the martyr of the people and the nation. This large crowd indicates her love and loyalty to our national project," Father Abdullah July, Pastor of the Roman catholic church, said.

Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian journalist with over two decades of experience, was killed on Wednesday in the city of Jenin, in the northern part of the West Bank.

Palestinian authorities claim that the Israeli military shot her in the head.

Israeli military suggested that Shireen might have been killed by stray fire from Palestinians, and Defence minister Benny Gantz announced an investigation.

[Update: earlier version of the headline mistakenly stated that the country was Israel. In fact, the footage was filmed in Palestinian Territory (occupied by Israel)]
