State of Palestine: Journalists, mourners at Al Jazeera office to say 'goodbye Shireen'
Colleagues, friends and officials have gathered at Al Jazeera offices in West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday to bid farewell to slain journalist Shireen Abu Akleh after she was killed amid an Israeli raid earlier that day.
Both the broadcaster and another reporter who was injured in the incident blamed Israeli forces for the death of Abu Akleh, with the Palestinian health ministry saying that the journalist was shot in the head when she was wearing her press bulletproof vest.
“Al Jazeera Media Network condemns this heinous crime, which intends to only prevent the media from conducting their duty. Al Jazeera holds the Israeli government and the occupation forces responsible for the killing of Shireen. It also calls on the international community to condemn and hold the Israeli occupation forces accountable for their intentional targeting and killing of Shireen,” said Qatar-based media network in a statement released shortly after Shireen's death.
The Israeli military claimed that its forces were attacked while operating in Jenin before they fired back, and said that they are "investigating the event and looking into the possibility that the journalists were hit by the Palestinian gunmen."
