Russia was facing an 'absolutely unacceptable threat' on its border with Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated speaking at the Victory Parade in Moscow on Sunday.

"NATO started active military development of the territories bordering our country. Therefore, an absolutely unacceptable threat to us was being systematically posed, right on our borders," he said.

Putin also pointed out that keeping the memory of those who defeated Nazism during the war is a common duty.

"We are proud of the undefeated, courageous generation of victors, of being their heirs, and our duty is to cherish the memory of those who crushed Nazism, who taught to us to be watchful and to do everything to prevent the horror of global war from happening again," the president said.

According to the president, Moscow urged NATO states to sign a treaty on security guarantees in December of 2021, but the bloc 'had completely different plans'.

"Another punitive operation in Donbass was openly being prepared, an invasion of our historic lands, including Crimea," Putin reported.

In his address to the Russian soldiers fighting in Donbass, Putin added that they are fighting 'for the Motherland, for its future, so that no one forgets the lessons of the Second World War'.

Parades dedicated to the victory in the WWII took place in 28 Russian cities.
