Netherlands: Amsterdam citizens protest as Dutch ballet hires Russian dancer
Dozens of demonstrators protested against the Dutch National Ballet hiring Russian ballerina Olga Smirnova, in Amsterdam on Saturday.
Smirnova was a dancer in the famous Moscow Bolshoi Ballet who moved to the Netherlands and joined the Dutch National Ballet after criticizing the war in Ukraine.
"It seems like a nice gesture, but it also seems like Russians celebrities, Russian famous dancers, they use this war as a social and economic elevator for themselves," the protester Kateryna Gabak argued.
The protest took place just before Smirnova’s debut in Amsterdam.
