Horsing around - century-old sport of horse javelin kept alive in Turkey
You’ve heard of horse riding and polo, but what about horse javelin? This equestrian sport is a centuries old game of bravery, and the Turkish city of Erzurum is fighting to keep the tradition alive.
The sport draws great attention in Erzurum, with 23 javelin sports clubs operating around the area. Typically, residents learn to ride and throw the javelin at a young age.
“Our activities here continue for 365 days. We train our horses. At the weekends, the equestrian sports clubs in Erzurum play bravery and friendship matches among themselves. We are playing these matches among ourselves in a wedding mood,” team leader Cuneyt Sayim said on Sunday.
It’s not the only place that’s horsing around – there are around 93 horse javelin clubs around the country.
