Dozens of supporters of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili held another rally for his release outside the prison in Rustavi, where the politician is jailed, on Saturday.

Protesters were seen with placards and flags chanting slogans and calling for the release of the former leader of the country, with some people camping outside the prison.

During the protest, a man died of a heart attack. An ambulance reportedly took him to the hospital already dead.

Saakashvili was detained on 1 October. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list for the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili, for which he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years' imprisonment respectively.

While in jail, Saakashvili went on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner. Supporters of the ex-president collected signatures on a petition addressed to the Georgian president and government demanding the former leader's release.
