
Georgia: Saakashvili supporters hold rally outside Rustavi prison
Supporters of former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili organised a protest outside a prison in Rustavi, Monday, where the politician is being held.

Leader of the 'United National Movement' party founded by Saakashvili, Nika Melia, said the party and its supporters were determined to fight till the end.
"The end of this process will be, you will see, a very happy Georgian population. Why I am so much sure? Because we are not doing it to fail. The state of Georgia cannot do it to failure. Our teammate Mikhel Saakashvili is a political prisoner. We won’t give up, we will do our best to have him released as soon as possible," Melia stated.
According to media reports, more than 3,000 people attended the rally.
Mikheil Saakashvili was detained in Georgia on 1 October. Earlier the former president said that he intended to return to the country from Ukraine in time for the October election.
He was put on a domestic wanted list as his was sentenced in absentia on connections to the murder case of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valeri Gelashvili. Authorities have repeatedly said they would detain the politician at a border crossing.
According to preliminary data in the first round of voting the ruling party 'Georgian Dream' got 46.65 percent of the vote. Saakashvili's 'United National Movement' was supported by 30.7 percent of voters.
