Germany: Berlin funeral home offers glass coffin for COVID victims

A funeral home in Berlin has designed a glass coffin lid to be used during last farewell ceremonies for COVID victims.

As seen in footage filmed in Berlin on Wednesday, the coffin called 'Snow White' has a transparent plexiglass lid so that relatives could see the deceased and pay last respects after not able to see each other for months of hospital treatment.

The creators Asta Maria Krohn and Helena Guiffrida came up with idea in early 2021, when realised that family members are not only in pain after losing their nears, but also are frustrated because of anti-virus measures.

"We talked to many people and we noticed that it makes many people suffer from the fact that it is not possible to say goodbye if someone has died from corona in the hospital," explained Helena Guiffrida.

The cheapest package of 'Snow White' coffin lid and funeral assistance costs €3,300 ($3,950) and was ordered seven times since the beginning for the year.

"The lid with the transparent plate can of course not be burned or buried together with the coffin," said Guiffrida, so the ceremonial top is changed for a normal one before burial or cremation.
