Mexico: Anger and dismay as UN website issues hamper process for migrants to enter US

Migrants on the US border dealt with great confusion on Monday as they continued to battle with registration problems on the UN website for their asylum. Migrants who have been waiting for up to two years in the Matamoros camp in Tamaulipas who were supposed to be able to begin the legal process to enter the United States were still unable to do so.

ACNUR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) set up a web page a few days ago so that refugees could register and begin their process to leave Mexico. The delays come after the Joe Biden administration reversed protocols enacted by Trump forcing migrants and asylum seekers to await processes in camps in Mexico.

"We ask ACNUR to come and tell us about what is happening, because they gave us a page and it doesn't open, they gave us a phone number and they don't answer," explained Nicaraguan migrant Oscar Alonso.

Many of the migrants are losing hope as these organisations do not give them the information they need and they don't know exactly what day they are going to cross.

Officially there is no longer an exact date for the first 25 migrants to leave the camp, it is said that they may possibly begin to pass from Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

Last week saw temperatures at the camp drop below freezing, further worsening the already difficult conditions in which the migrants are living.
